View Full Version : Post Counts
daemon 3rd March 2005, 04:20 PM How many here display post counts on their site?
Previously we only had it removed in the postbit and members didn't seem to mind. About a week ago I removed all references to post count and nobody has even noticed yet.
We feel that post counts encourage unnecessary competition and are rather pointless (it also helps put new members and older members on the same playing field).
Floris 3rd March 2005, 04:28 PM If we reach 1 million postcount I am considering to remove it from the posts to not scare off members.
Oblivion Knight 3rd March 2005, 04:31 PM Currently, post counts continue to be shown on my forum.
At the moment, there are only a few people with over 1,000 posts anyway.
KingSpade 3rd March 2005, 06:55 PM Personally, if you've earned the posts then I think displaying them should not be an issue. To further explain, if you have posted quality posts and have maintained your post count, having it displayed to other members should not present an issue.
gruchacz 3rd March 2005, 07:38 PM I'm still showing post counts, the highest member has over 6000 posts...
redalert5 4th March 2005, 04:57 AM mine like to compete over post, ofcourse this genrates some spam...hey atleast they posting...right?
Moparx 4th March 2005, 05:46 AM i removed post counts from the postbit from my forum, but allow it in the user's profile.
people are less prone to spam in order to have a higher post count if is no longer a 'incentive' to do so.
Disjunto 4th March 2005, 06:14 AM i still have it enabled.... people dont compete for a higher postcount.... just call each other spammers for having higher posts per day :P
Schizoid Man 4th March 2005, 03:09 PM It imazes me how many members are obsessed with postcounts.
You delete some old threads then you get the spanish Inquisition why their postcount has dropped.
Personally, I always cut my own postcount down.....cos I reckon the higher your postcount, the more of a Saddo you look. :D
mf 4th March 2005, 10:33 PM Most of my forum is accessible to guests, for both posting and viewing (and if things ever get out of hand I will simply hack in a vericode system for anti-spam). There is a "unique guest" system using tripcodes (similar to a password), reducing the need to even register. Registered users have access to a "Random" forum, where they are allowed to swear, post off-topic things, and whatnot, from which guests are barred. It does not count any posts. All the public boards have a clear "topic" - which should eliminate any postcount-spam posts. So basically, any user's postcount indicates how many useful posts they have made, which to me is a good enough reason for per-user competition in getting highest post count. If a thread is stupid, I will just move it to the Random forum, and it will be automagically deducted from postcount.
Neutral Singh 6th March 2005, 10:04 PM Yes !! I do have post counts on but for admin and moderators its implementation is different. Once an admin or a moderator has reached a post count of 1000 posts, i change that to zero. hee! hee!! This gives my forums a more kind of balanced look as admin & moderators are always going to post more posts than regular members. interestingly i do not find any option in vB to disabling showing post count for admin and moderators altogether, perhaps i have not come across as yet... there are so many options you have as an admin. Its well six months since i swithced to vB and i still surprised to find some new unexplored features in vBulletin admin section. :)
Virtex-II 6th March 2005, 10:08 PM I wasconsidering the fact of removing it from my forum but I am not sure cos I think it's a way to keep trace of what your members do and how often they partecipate....:\
BRC2 17th March 2005, 04:12 PM Post counts are currently displayed. However, I would not mind them only being shown in the member's list or profiles...not in threads.
thespaceinvader 21st March 2005, 04:28 PM Post counts shouldn't matter; It's just a number. And if they include ranks, then that's still only a small reason. Anyway, after a while, people become 'obsessed' with post counts, and start to spam (Stupid Pointless Annoying Messages).
jzewatsky 27th March 2005, 01:04 PM I wish I had post count issues. My highest post count on my site is 22(me), with the next highest being 10. We are a small forum however. I dont think that post count is actually that important, but shouldnt users be somehow rewarded for posting? I use ucash. Do you think that I should continue to post and reply on my board, or stop and let my members take over. I worry that the entire board will become a dialog with myself...oops I guess that would be a monolog.
Estaban 27th March 2005, 08:27 PM Postcounts are fun, but I also think it leads to spam. Spam plain sucks. It's no fun at all, users will only annoy you. You have a forum because you want to share information / brainstorm over things, don't you? You want to discuss items, and see what other people thing of it. Spamusers should be banned whenever they start to be really annoying. I know some guy and he told me that he was proud of him posting 600+ posts on 3 days. None of them were of real value, not to mention I told him he was an ass. So he asked me how to renew his primairy IP to start spamming again. Come on! What is your problem with annoying people, I thought. Anyway I don't help users spamming so much and spamming only to annoy people.
Apoco 28th March 2005, 06:06 AM We feel that post counts encourage unnecessary competition and are rather pointless (it also helps put new members and older members on the same playing field).
That is one of the exact reasons I have them on my sites. Postcounts encourage others to post in 'competition' with each other, thus making more activity on the boards. I know in one night, 4 others, and myself, made ~2,000 posts total in a "Post War". I eventually closed the board so I could get the last reply on all the threads and go to bed (girl was unhappy). lol, but for the next 2-3 weeks, we had a large number of new posters/activity because of that. Honestly, I am thinking of doing it again. ;-)
marty21 8th April 2005, 06:22 PM post counts do show how busy a site is, but i guess they can be intimidating for newer users, on urban75 i have nearly 8,000 posts, and i'm not even in the top 20 posters, the no.1 poster has about 23,000, i don't know where he gets the time:D
Couch 8th April 2005, 09:44 PM On the bigger of the forums I run they are on. It isnt massive anyway with the top poster having 6000 posts. I do a monthly stats posts with top 20 posters, top 20 posters this month and average posts per joined day. It generates a bit of competition in what is a 95% off topic forum anyway.
Schizoid Man 9th April 2005, 02:01 PM I'm not sure why Members are so obsessed with post counts.
AFAIC the higher the post count, the sadder the member...cos he has less of a real life.
It goes without saying that I'm the highest poster on my board! :*(
Moncal 9th April 2005, 08:33 PM I have post counts on because when I'm a member of a forum I like to know how I am doing. When I am an admin I like to easily see how everyone else is doing.

Exactly what I said. :P But users tend to take advantage of certain statistics on your forum. If they can't be bothered with post counts, they go for another statistic to be top in.
As the old saying goes...what was it again? It was something about not using something to do something, or something like that.
Sjun 14th May 2005, 02:28 PM On our forums I keep the postcounts displayed.
We even have a +1 thread where people can post "+1" solely for the purpose of adding one post to their postcount. It doesn't bother me at all.
I tend to keep the moderation as low as possible aswell, we have some subforums for serious stuff, but for the rest of the forums the posts are just for spending some time reading others crap, so to speak :P it's all about the chit-chat.
The board is up since 09-2003, and the number 2 poster has +/- 14.000 posts, the number 1 poster more then doubles that.
Me myself and I are on the way to the 9.000 posts, giving me a No.11 position, ordered by postcount. ;)
it's all about the low moderation, i want people to enjoy themselves without having to care about some tight rules. and it works out pretty fine. :D
Azhria Lilu 14th May 2005, 02:31 PM I have it showing on all my sites, but it's not something that interests me personally. I couldn't tell you my postcount on any of the sites I go to - I just don't find it important.
ja3 16th May 2005, 09:38 AM I like postcount and I am not even thinking about removing it :P
