if for some reason a forum becomes inactive for a bit, i will create one or more discussion generating thread to revive it.

I tend to close them and wait for someone to complain ..

If no one complains then I delete them (moving the threads to another forum in the meantime) ..

If someone does complain I open it up again ..

Most of the forums that end up like that on my site are forums for games that are nolonger played. I just keep them around until the next upgrade. Hey, you never know, there may be a new patch :)

Try to revive it with some new threads, and if that doesn't work, merge it with another forum where the topical discussion would fit in.

Merging the threads seems logical, if the forum is in face 'dead', though it's always best to attempt to revive it if at all possible. If you members just don't seem to have any interest in the specific forum, then I'd move to merge it or simply hide it from display.

creating new threads every now and again does the trick. members starting threads in inactive areas doesn't happen much, so you give them that almighty push by doing it for them...... normally turns into a few pages quick if it is an interesting subject

I think I would be concerned if the last post were an entire WEEK ago. In my not-so-humble opinion, of course. ;)

I would usually merge the forum with another forum and delete it if demand for that certain forum subsides.
