Your description of totse, fails actually to describe the forums. You have described just 2 of the forums, backyard ballistics and Spurious Generalities. These forums may attract a large amount of “monkey with keyboards” as you say, but the majority of the “newbies” do not stay a long time. The forum has large community of active posters who have legitimate topics so do not judge a community on specific misfits who eventually leave or get banned.
(on the amount of hits a day it is in the millions, and it was made in the late 80s on a dialup)
