Not many, a few. Until your site gets indexed by google and yahoo. Can take 2-3 months to start to show up..
Then you also have to deal with the google and yahoo bots..

Depends on how much I advertise it but usually I expect VERY minimal amounts of users, and thats what I usually get :D

I think it depends on what you're trying to go for... do you want to have a personal community in which you know most of the members? Then a small amount of users you'd might want to have. If you want something bigger, and cover a larger aspect, then you can go for something more.

Personally, whenever I create a site, I never aim for a certain amount of visitors, but rather create something so that visitors have something, and then leave room for expansion as the site gets bigger.

personally, for my future forum, i'm looking for a lot of people to register....

the forum, a health conscious forum, will actually be tuned toward getting people to join a different health program that i'm apart of which actually has its own forum but the forum, and the program, are not free.

mi forum will be free, and though its possible that a lot people might hang out at mine a lot, the goal is to get people interested in and joining the other health program....my forum will just be a hub for people to talk about health, environment, spirituality and few other related topics until they decide if they want to join or not.

so, making it informative, interesting, engaging, entertaining seems informative....

just musing here, mayhaps someone else has some thoughts, tips etc...
