First, you ought to think about what you want from the forum: are you expecting this to be an income-producing venture; do you just want to have interesting conversations with people; do you want to push a particular political or social agenda?

After you have made (and articulated) these two decisions, all else follows.

Remember, forums are not about software or skins, or hits per day or SEO--they are about people connecting with people. If you can make the latter happen, you will have a successful forum. If you can't, none of the other stuff matters.

Absolutely agree with the post above, the questions you have tio answer are:
1) what niche I an going to take, will it a specilized or a general forum;
2) why my visitors would like to come to it, what I can give them, whether some unique info, prizes or free domains etc.
3) how you're qoing to make money on your forum.

Think about buying a good, unique skin, advertisement, finding sites that have a similar topic and ask about exchanging links, think of the age group that your topic is targeted at and base your forum more around that.
