Both technologies can support your website equally well, and ultimately it comes down to personal preference, system familiarity and your comfort level.

Linux or Microsoft... both can work for you! But which is your preference?

I'm using linux because it's cheaper than windows and I'd say it's not worse than windows.

I use OS X as my main OS these days, though I have XP running on my gamecomputer and Linux or Unix running on servers .. isn't my world perfect ;)

I started on Windows Boxes, but now use Linux. I don't really have much of a preference as I am happy with what ever works, just that Linux is almost always cheaper and I am still on a budget. ;)

There are two issues that of the need and price, for a static HTML site I don't need Windows, and quite I'm happy about it.

Untill Linux my scripts can run on Linux, I won't go for Windows. Prefer free things.

Having run a busy forum on both - I much prefer the ease of installing and updating apache/mysql/php on windows - however, I found apache to be less stable on windows - it occasionally crashed for no reason. I never got round to trying IIS instead.

I prefer to use Linux. It's more usable and more reliable than Windows.

Linux, because for some reason, Windows won't let you CHMOD directories

Use the security tab instead to set your folder permissions. ;)

Wheres the love for OS X?:\Believe me, I'm very much in love with OSX but where can you find some cheap Mac server for rent ?

I'm using linux because it's cheaper than windows and I'd say it's not worse than windows.Right ;)

And Id' like to say something more about *nix, it's always black or white, while windows sometimes is gray, some stuff it's just a closed box that you cannot change, understand or modify, especially when something goes wrong.

Depends on the need and use..

Example
For a website that was just going to be html, php based using vBulletin..

Definately use Linux/Apache.

For a business server, certain application servers, i think Microsoft Server 2003 is best or Small Business server.

Overall, most web-based websites will use Linux and are better off using Linux..

I like linux much more. However, I am using windows at the moment because linux still has very nasty driver support (not to mention, not many games ported).

My next switch of OS will be from Windows -> OSX. :)

I'm more familiar with Windows, so when I start my forum, that's likely what I'll use. A friend of mine swears by Linux, though. He says there's nothing better for running a forum. Since I don't own Linux, I guess I'll never know.

I prefer to use Windows as my normal operating system, but when it comes to servers, I would prefer using Linux, since they tend to be more reliable than Windows Servers I know of.

It is difficult to say what I prefer. But I think if you not sure what will you need exectly soon betre to use webhosting which allow you to move from one to other platform easily. Something like GoWebsite (http://gowebsite.com/hosting_plans.html)

In my opinion. Linux hosting is still the best since all most of the hosting companies does use linux, They can't be wrong since Linux is really made to be really stable. All bug fixes are fixed immediately by the dedicated communities of linux enthusiasts.

For a server I would think Linux since it is a lot more secure.
