View Full Version : Telling Memebers a thread is "closed"
darnoldy 17th September 2006, 03:38 AM On the forum display, there is a special icon for threads that are closed.
Do normal members need to know this info?
If a thread has unread messages, do you make a decision to read it based on whether or not its closed?
penguinmama 19th September 2006, 12:30 AM I find the users dislike it when a thread is closed, so I rarely close them... but when I do, someone usually asks about it fairly quickly without me needing to draw attention to it. And then the same topic usually gets brought up in 15 new threads LOL!
Floris 19th September 2006, 01:15 AM If a thread in a specific discussion is closed by me I tend to inform all posters why, by posting a final msg.
Chroder 19th September 2006, 06:13 AM I wish there was a feature that let the mod that closes the thread to enter a message without bumping the thread. So a thread message, but not actually a post.
As soon as a thread is closed, there's like 10x the amount of views 'cuz everyone wants to know why it was closed ;)
penguinmama 25th September 2006, 02:53 AM Yep, that's about right! (Everyone wanting to know why it's closed)
NameChangedByFloris 20th October 2006, 04:07 PM Yep, that's about right! (Everyone wanting to know why it's closed)
bann em, thats always fun lol:D;) or you could screw with them and take all there powers away
Sparky_s 20th October 2006, 11:06 PM I always post a message as to why it is closed.
If it is spam, I mostly snip the link and close the thread.
Sephiroth 22nd October 2006, 07:35 PM Whenever I close a thread, I find it to be a habit to post why said thread is closed, and I usually give a detailed explanation as well. However, that's just me. :p Usually for a spam thread, I usually just delete it, or send it to a spam archives if that particular site has one set up. :P
Pyro 28th October 2006, 07:51 PM Yeah, I always post why a thread was closed. Otherwise users bug me and ask why it's closed, and on some communities I've seen it turn into outright rebellion under the heading of forced censorship. :)
lsatblu 6th November 2006, 03:18 AM I usually post a reason why the thread is closed.
Robert 6th November 2006, 01:54 PM If a thread in a specific discussion is closed by me I tend to inform all posters why, by posting a final msg.
I too am a fan of telling people why a thread has been closed.
More often than not it is a slightly contentious thread that gets closed, and often putting a short reason why can help with the PR of the forum, rather than looking like an arbitrary decision which can put members off.
Onimua 6th November 2006, 09:02 PM I usually close the thread and leave a reason why, and if I have to, point out to specific people what they should and shouldn't have done. I also tell people that if they wish, they can PM me to discuss specifics, and I do also tell them that if they wish, they may start the thread again.
Alkah 11th December 2006, 12:22 PM Yeah, usually a detailed explanation would save me 3-4 PM replies. I have a very small amount of posters, and its like, my site wouldnt be posted on at all if it werent for those 3-4 people. When I close a thread, red flags go up everywhere. The forum that has most fame on my site is the debate forum so, thats a lock waiting to happen *wink*.
