I've been hacking my site and I'm interested in an option to render the 5 latest threads under category on index page. Does anyone have an available script?

For example, I don't want to show the lastpost.
What I want is something like this...

MAIN CATEGORY (195)
This is the description for MAIN CATEGORY.
title -------- author -------- date ---------- rating
mytitle ***** fran ***** 07/12/2003 **** (rating image)

I would like the option to choose this template/hack elsewhere throughout the site if possible ( ie. forumdisplay).

I have tried a few things, but couldn't get this done without adding too much to the source code and ending up with many queries and stuff I couldn't limit properly. And it screwed up the design.
