vBulletin has improved their registration, security and features and permissions a lot. In the last year we hardly had any spam because it is getting really hard for the spammers to bypass security or meassures taken against spam.
They are pretty bored most of the time (the staff), so perhaps we might some time find that staff are obsolete. (uhoh)
Or maybe we're just lucky .. do you have a lot of problems with spam / abuse on your site?

Ohhhh yeah. On Webmaster-Talk, we get tons of spam! I think we'd die if we didn't have the dedicated mods we have.
I don't think spam'll ever stop being a problem. No matter what measures we take, I think spammers will always find a way to get past them if they try hard enough.

And if its not spammers, it will be trolls causing problems, no safeguards against them

On my board we have only had 1 spam post (*Robert madly runs around the room touching every piece of wood in sight). And thankfully we have not had too many trolls.
But I think that to view the task of staff as Police, who remove spam and censor users is to only focus on their most rudimentary tasks.
The most valuable roll a staff member can play is as topic guide, keeping the discussion on track and adding valuable comment to keep the conversation interesting and alive.
This is a task I can't see any piece of software doing, even decades if not centuries into the future.

Maybe Spammers don't find it worth-it to spam here.

The staff on my forums have responsibilities other than clamping down on spammers but commerical spammers seem to come and go in waves.
